Samaritans

Founded in 1953 by Chad Varah, Samaritans has over 300 branches throughout the UK, and volunteers are available to respond to callers 24 hours a day every day of the year.

Volunteers offer emotional support to callers in distress and despair, and especially to those who are suicidal. Befriending is completely confidential, non-judgemental and non advice-giving.

Callers contact Samaritans by telephone, e-mail or texting, and most Samaritan branches are open to anyone who wants to talk face-to-face.

Volunteers come from all walks of life and are of all ages; and are selected and trained by their local branches. New volunteers are always needed. For further information on selection and training, call your local branch as listed in the phone book.
