Hobbies not Grandchildren

Hobbies and friends are what make for a satisfying retirement, not grandchildren.

The University of Greenwich has published a study measuring the ‘life satisfaction‘ of retired people. They conclude that children and grandchildren have little effect on the life satisfaction of retired people, and that developing  hobbies and interests are much more likely to make for a happier life in retirement.    Not surprisingly, the study finds that people who had had a high-powered or all-absorbing job find the adjustment to life after retirement most difficult, partly because  they have no hobbies or outside interests to fall back on.
There are 14 million people in UK who are over 60, and they are increasingly called on to provide care for grandchildren, which has been costed at £3.9 billion annually .
